Committees and Programs
Awards
Awards are presented to winners of the Closed Shows for high point, reserve high point, novice, and parent/child categories at the Annual Member Banquet held each winter. To be eligible to receive year-end high point awards, you must be a member in good standing and meet any additional requirements.
Banquet
The annual banquet has traditionally been held each winter at the Community Center in Scandia. In addition to the awards for the Closed Shows, the Versatility Award winners are acknowledged, and the incoming Royalty is crowned.
Clinics
Several clinics and other learning opportunities are offered throughout the year. Examples of past club clinics are horse first aid, extreme trail obstacles, soccer, team penning, showmanship, leg yielding, and saddle fitting. These are a great way to learn something new and have fun with fellow club members.
Closed Shows
Each year the club hosts shows for members only. Points earned from these shows qualify members for year-end high point, reserve high point, leadline and novice awards. Typical shows are as follows:
Combination Pleasure and Game Show: Pleasure classes include both English and Western pleasure, showmanship, halter and equitation. Game classes may include barrels, scudda ho, jumping figure 8, pole weaving, keyhole ... plus others.
All Games Show: The club’s most widely attended show; games usually include barrels, western relay race, 4-in-a-line, keyhole, one-barrel pennant, jumping figure 8, pole weaving, and egg and spoon.
Fun Shows: Once in awhile, an extra fun show is hosted at the discretion of the Closed Show Committee. Results do not count toward the year-end high point awards, but are a chance for all club members to gather and have a fun time. Past classes have included pole bending, crazy poles, blindfold barrels, boot scramble, and musical sacks.
Over-the-Hill Show: See description under “Over-the-Hill Show.”
Donations
Scandia Riders is committed to supporting community projects and has donated generously to various organizations such as Truhaven Horse Rescue, the Equestrian Friends of Governor Knowles State Forest, Forest Lake High School FFA, Forest Lake High School Senior Party, and Misfit Acres.
From time to time, donations are given to individuals on an as-needed basis.
Fund Raising
In previous years members have volunteered to assist at the Minnesota Horse Expo in April and to usher in the Coliseum at the Minnesota State Fair to help raise money for our club. The opportunity to assist at the Minnesota Horse Expo in April is a possibility each year, but unfortunately the Minnesota State Fair no longer requests ushers for the Coliseum events.
In conjunction with the annual year-end banquet, the club conducts a Silent Auction of horse-related and non-horse related items that have been donated by local businesses and club members. This has been a very successful fundraising event for the club.
Throughout the spring and summer, the club sells Raffle tickets for the chance of winning cash prizes. The winning raffle tickets are drawn and winners announced during the 2nd WSCA Game Show held in late summer. (Winners do not have to be present to win.)
The 2 Open Game Shows are major fund-raising events for the club. (More information below).
Membership
A complete list is kept with names, addresses, telephone numbers, and e-mail addresses of current members.
Novice Program
This program is designed to encourage riders who have limited show experience to compete at a novice level. To qualify for this program, the rider shall not have placed first or second in a SRSC Closed Show, open WSCA show, or breed show in the past three years as of the beginning of the season. Each class division is considered separately when determining novice status. Placing in Walk/Trot does not disqualify you from this program. Novice riders will be limited to novice classes only. There are year-end awards for the Novice Program.
Open Game Show & Open Pleasure/Game Show
As major fund-raising events, Scandia Riders Saddle Club holds two WSCA-recognized Open Horse Shows where both members and non-members can qualify to ride in the WSCA’s Champ Show. The Open Shows are held at the Dead Broke Arena in Hugo, MN. These are always a fun time and a great way for club members to make new friends and recruit new club members!
Over-the-Hill Show
Each year the SRSC Royalty host an Over-the-Hill Show for all SRSC members 18 years of age or older. Results of this show do not count toward the year-end high point awards. Both Western and English classes are included. Watch our website and Facebook page for a date and information.
Parade Unit
In the past, our superb parade unit has done a fantastic job of representing the club at parades in the surrounding communities. The combination of horse and rider, plus the teamwork as a unit, makes for an impressive group. Currently, the club participates in the Hugo Good Neighbor Days and Scandia Taco Daze parades.
Ring & Grounds
Scandia Riders Saddle Club maintains a riding ring located approximately 1 mile north of the intersection of Highway 97 and Olinda Trail (County Road 3) in Scandia where the Closed Shows and other club activities are held. Arena amenities include excellent footing, sturdy rails, safe gates, and bleachers for spectators. The arena grounds include a port-a-potty and trash disposal receptacles. Please note that there is no running water on the grounds. Club members are welcome to use the riding ring at any time (when the arena is not being used for a club event).
Royalty/Public Relations
Throughout the years, Scandia Riders Saddle Club has had a proud tradition of Royalty representing the club. The Queen/King, Princess/Prince, and Junior Princess/Prince represent SRSC at horse shows, the WSCA Champ Show, Minnesota Horse Expo, tack swaps, club fund raisers, parades, community volunteer events, and more. If you'd like to learn more about becoming SRSC Royalty, please click here for information and guidelines. It's a wonderful experience that you'll remember for a lifetime!
New Royalty is announced annually at the SRSC's Awards Banquet.
This year's Royalty is planning an exciting year. In addition to attending many shows, the Royalty plans to participate in the "Taco Daze" parade, and complete a community service project, as well as other projects throughout the year. Articles about upcoming Royalty and club events will be published in the WSCA Spotlight and on the Scandia Riders website.
Scholarship Award
The scholarship is open to any Scandia Riders Saddle Club member to help meet expenses that would result from entering or attending a Vocational Technical School or College. To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, the applicant must have been a member in good standing for one full year previous to the application due date. An application form and list of additional requirements can be obtained by clicking here.
This is a general scholarship in the amount of $500.00. No specific field of study or particular institute is designated as a pre-requisite. The application form can be found on the SRSC’s website and is due by July 15th. All applicants will meet and be interviewed by the Scholarship Committee at the SRSC General Meeting in August. One scholarship will be awarded at the SRSC Year-End Banquet held in January.
Sponsorship Program
This sponsorship program is open to Scandia Riders Saddle Club members to help meet some expenses that would result from competing at the State Fair Horse Show, or the Minnesota 4H State Horse Show, or the WSCA Champ Show. Each applicant may apply for sponsorship to only one of the listed shows per year and the sponsorship will be in the amount of $60. Please click here for information.
Sunshine Committee
This committee could well be called the Hospitality Committee. Our role is to welcome new members and find answers to their questions about the club. Most important, we would like to be informed when a club member has a major event in their life, such as a serious illness, a death, or a birth (this does not include foals). We’ll send them a card and let them know that we’re thinking of them.
Trail Rides
The SRSC hosts several trail rides each summer at a variety of locations. Trail rides can include local one-day rides to long weekend get-aways. Proper trail etiquette must be followed on all club rides. There is usually a potluck at the end of the ride. This is an excellent way to unwind, relax, get to know your fellow club members, and explore new trails!
Versatility Award
The purpose of this award is to honor the horse, but the points are earned by the horse/same rider combination. The Versatility Award goes to the horse that can participate successfully in a variety of disciplines such as showing in English/Western pleasure and games, trail riding, and other activities offered by SRSC. This is a great opportunity to get out, challenge yourself, try new things with your horse, and meet more club members.
Competing for the SRSC Versatility Award is a lot of hard work, but very worthwhile – you and your horse will learn and grow with each new experience. Complete rules and a record form are available from the Versatility Chairperson.
